There are a few things to consider when choosing your field hockey stick. Your skill level and the position you play are the two most important factors.

Of course if you’re looking for something specific, check out one of my guides below:

Best Field Hockey Stick For Beginners

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Forwards

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Midfielders

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Defenders

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Indoors

Best Field Hockey Sticks

Skill Level

Depending on your experience in the game can depend on the stick you use. There are sticks designed specifically for beginners and for elite players, and everyone else in between.

Beginners: Look for a stick that is a good all around stick. That will allow you to learn the game and grow your skills.

Look for a stick with a combination of wood or lower carbon content for better control and durability. A medium bow and balanced shape would be ideal.

Intermediate: Consider sticks with more carbon content, offering better performance and durability.

Advanced: High-carbon sticks with a specialized bow for power and precision (like low-bow sticks for drag flicking) would be the best fit.

Position

The stick you choose for the position you can play can help (or hurt) your game. Certain positions need certain qualities in the stick they choose.

Forward: Consider a stick that is lighter in weight that has some power to it. J shape and midi toe are the best head shape for forwards as you need to dribble and shoot.

Defender: Look for a stick that is longer in length and is heavier. The Maxi toe shape is best for defenders, as it has a larger area which makes it good for trapping and for hitting.

Midfielder: It can vary depending if they tend to play more offensively or defensively. A midfielder plays the middle of the field, but some play more forward or defensive.

A mix of components in a forward and defender stick can be useful to a midfielder.

Field location

Indoor and outdoor sticks can vary, so if you are playing indoors don’t forget to look for an indoor stick to use.

Indoor sticks are lighter, shorter, and built for quick handling and precision on smaller courts, while outdoor sticks are heavier, longer, and designed for power, reach, and durability over a larger field.

Stick Length

When looking for a stick you should also remember the length of the stick is important.

The stick should come up to your hip bone. If a stick is too long or too short, it may not work for you. Here is a quick guide of what size stick you will need.

Height

Stick Size

3’5” and under

24”

3’6” to 3’8”

26”

3’8” to 4”

28”

4’1” to 4’3”

30”

4’4” to 4’6”

32”

4’7” to 5’0”

34″

5’1” to 5’3” 35”

35.5”

5’4” to 5’8”

36”-36.5”

5’9” to 5’11”

37”-37.5”

6” and up

38”

Material

Wood: Traditional, provides a natural feel and great control. Ideal for beginners or those who prefer a more classic, soft touch. However, it is heavier and less durable than modern materials.

Composite: (Fiberglass, Carbon, Aramid, etc.): Lighter, more durable, and provides better power and strength. Carbon sticks, in particular, are stiff and provide excellent power and control, but they can be more expensive.

Aluminum: Lightweight but tends to be less durable and not as popular as fiberglass or carbon sticks.

Shape (Bow Profile)

Low Bow: Offers more control and is great for drag flicks and close ball work, often favored by attackers and midfielders.

Medium Bow: A balanced option for most positions, offering versatility in both control and power.

High Bow: Gives more power and is useful for powerful hits, often preferred by defenders.

Toe Shape

Hook Toe: Ideal for drag flicking and ball control.

Midi or Regular Toe: Provides a versatile, more traditional feel. It’s good for most players who want a balanced stick.

Maxi Toe: Great for players who do a lot of trapping and controlling.

Ultimately, personal preference plays a significant role. The feel of the stick, the weight, and the type of playstyle you prefer should guide your decision. Test different sticks in-store if possible.

Keeping your field hockey skills sharp during the off-season is essential for maintaining performance. You can keep your skills sharp by working on them alone or with a friend or teammates.

Here are some drills to help you stay on top of your game.

1. Wall/Rebounder Passing

The Drill

Stand facing a solid wall or rebounder and pass the ball against it using various techniques such as push passes, hits, and slaps.

Practice receiving the ball on your stick after each pass. Vary the distance and speed to simulate different in-game situations.

The Goal: This drill is to help you pass and receive the ball. Being able to pass the ball smoothly and sharply to a teammate is important as you don’t want the opposing team to intercept or steal the ball. Having the ability to not allow the ball to bounce off your stick and control it is another important skill to have. This drill is great for that as it allows you to improve on your receiving skills.

For Advanced players: Move the rebounder or yourself further away from each other. Practice on long distance passing and receiving.

If you are looking for a rebounder, I recommend this one. There are two sides to it and each side helps with a skill such as passing and knocking down the ball. It is also great with pairing to the field hockey star app.

Passing and Receiving with a Partner

The Drill

Stand facing a partner, or if with more than two people make a shape that will allow you to practice. Pass the ball using various techniques such as push passes, hits and slaps.

Practice receiving the ball on your stick after each pass. Vary the distance and speed to simulate different in-game situations.

Partner up and practice passing and receiving drills. Work on accurate passing, controlling the ball and quick, precise transfers.

Vary the distance and angles to simulate different game scenarios. Changing it up and working with people instead of a wall or rebounder gives you the chance to simulate in game situations.

The Goal: Another drill to help you improve your passing and rebounding. Again these skills are highly important to your game so it is important to practice these. Make sure you and your teammates are distancing yourselves from different distance to work on passing. Practice on long distance passing and receiving, as well as quick, short passes.

For Advanced Players: Try this drill with more than two people. If you have a group of three, you can start with passing and receiving the ball with each other. After a little bit of time, two of you can go on the offensive side and have the other person be a defender.

This allows for the two offensive players to work on their passing and receiving, while the defender can work on intercepting the ball, stopping the ball, jab and poking.

Stickwork Challenges

The Drill

Create challenges for yourself to dribble around with cones. You can make any shape or setup you want based on your skill level. Make them different enough that you don’t just get used to the same pattern each time.

The Goal: This drill is designed to develop your stick skills. You want to get more proficient and faster with stickhandling. Keep at it until you can make moves with the ball without having to think about it too much.

For Advanced Players: Time yourself and make goals to see how fast you can get through a specific setup. This way you can track your progress over time to see how you’re improving and set new goals for yourself.

Agility Ladder Drills

The Drill

Use an agility ladder to work on footwork and agility. Perform ladder drills with quick feet, lateral movements, and forward/backward runs. These drills improve coordination and quick reactions.

The Goal: The agility ladder is a great drill to help improve your speed and agility. Being fast and able to get around the field is another important part of the game.

For Advanced Players: Each time you do this drill time yourself. Try to improve on how fast you can do these drills.

To make it more challenging set an alarm a few seconds faster than your fasts clocked time. Being able to push yourself, even by a few seconds, can help improve your speed.

If you are looking for an agility ladder, I recommend this one. It also comes with a jump rope, cones and hurdles. All can be beneficial to your training.

3D Skills Practice

Work on advanced stick skills such as 3D skills, which involve lifting and controlling the ball in the air. Practice lifts, aerials, and juggling to enhance your ability to handle the ball in different situations.

Shooting Practice

The Drill

Set up a goal or target and practice shooting from various distances. Focus on your technique, aiming for accuracy and power. Incorporate volleys, sweeps, and flicks into your shooting routine.

The Goal: To improve your offensive skills and shooting. Burying the ball in the back of the goal is fun. To be able to do that you need to practice shooting.

For Advanced Players: Challenge yourself in different ways while practicing your shooting. Have someone else play defense and try to jab or steal the ball from you before you shoot.

You can start behind the top of the circle and dribble in. The defender should run towards you and try to jab or steal the ball from you.

Once you get passed the defender either shoot right away or take a dribble or two then shoot.

You can use any goal that you normally play on, set up your own goal at home or I recommend one of these goals.

One-on-One Defensive Drills

The Drill

Work on defensive skills by engaging in one-on-one drills with a partner. Practice jabbing, tackles and interceptions. Have one person start on offense and have one person on defense.

The player on offense will start by dribbling the ball towards you, the defender. Once they have advanced towards you, try to jab or poke the ball away. You can do this drill as many times as you want, but after three successful steals switch to offense and let the other player become the defender.

To improve on intercepting the ball. have two players on offense and one on defense. The two on offense will have a set amount of dribbles they can take and then they have to pass it. Of course they can pass it before the set amount is up. As the defender you have to intercept the ball on their pass.

Again, after three successful intercepts switch and become one of the offensive players. Make sure everyone gets a chance at being both offense and defense.

The Goal: This drill is to improve your defensive capabilities. Working on your jabbing, intercepting and tackles can immensely help your defensive game.

For Advanced Players: Work on these drills with a clock. Set a clock to a time and before the time is up you need to stop the offense.

Another way to challenge yourself with this drill is on the offensive side. Earlier I mentioned having the offense have x amount of dribbles before passing. This time shorten the amount of dribbles you can make before passing the ball.

Conditioning Sprints with Ball

The Drill

Combine fitness and skill work by performing sprints with the ball. Dribble the ball at high speed for short distances, then rest and repeat. This drill simulates game-like conditions and improves ball control under pressure.

The Goal: To help your dribbling game as well as your speed. It can be tough dribbling and running at the same time, so practicing them together can help you do both.

For Advanced Players: Put up obstacles in your way so that you have to dribble around them. You can use cones or people to be an obstacle.

Another way to improve is timing yourself. See how long it takes you to get from one side of the field to another. Do this several times. Once you have your fastest time you can set up a clock and set it up so that your fastest speed is the longest time you are allowed to go.

It is important to focus on your dribbling skills as well.

Game Simulations

The Drill

Set up small-sided games or scrimmage situations with teammates. Focus on applying your skills in a realistic game setting. This helps maintain your tactical awareness and decision-making abilities.

The Goal: This is designed to help improve everyone’s game. Everyone can learn and improve their skills since it will be set up for a game like scenario. To help everyone learn, have one or two people watch the game happen and stop if something is not going well.

For example, if one player keeps making the same mistake, the person watching can stop the game and ask or tell if the player knows what they are doing wrong. From there they can show the player how to do it correctly.

Video Analysis

Record yourself during drills and games, and review the footage. Analyze your technique, positioning, and decision-making to identify areas for improvement.

The Goal of this is for you to improve on whatever skill you are recording. You can watch yourself and see what area you need to improve on and what areas you are doing well in. If you see you are doing well in dribbling but not in shooting, then you will know to focus a little more on shooting to improve that skill.

If you and another teammate are comfortable you can look at each others recordings. This can allow you to get someone else’s feedback on where you can improve, but it also allows you to see how someone else is practicing and playing. Seeing how someone else plays might help you with your own skill set.

Fitness and Skill Integration

Combine fitness exercises with skill drills to mimic the demands of the game. For example, perform agility drills and immediately transition into passing or shooting exercises.

This could mean going from the agility ladder drill and then right away going to the wall/rebounder passing drill.

Fitness

Staying fit is important as it allows you to stay in shape. There are tons of ways to keep up your fitness during the offseason. Playing another sport, going for a run and strength training to name a few.

Whatever fitness activity you decide to do is fine, as long as you are staying active. And remember to start at your level of fitness; if you are brand new to something do not dive right in as you could injure yourself.

For example if you are starting yoga for the first time you don’t need to do the hardest pose. Start off with poses that you are capable and work your way up.

Consistency is key, so incorporate these drills into your off-season training routine regularly. Adjust the intensity based on your fitness level and gradually increase the difficulty as you progress.

Remember practice makes perfect, or at least helps us improve our skills. The more you practice the better you will get.

Additionally, seek feedback from coaches or experienced players to fine-tune your skills.

It has remarkable control which is great for a new player. Being able to have control of the stick as well as controlling the ball is important when learning the game.

The composition of the 3.6 Control Bow is 95% Fiberglass, 5% Kevlar. It also has a low bow.

This stick is great for those with a range of skills as you can learn on this stick. It does not matter what position you play (except for goalie) as you can learn the basics on this stick as well as things specific to each position.

I mentioned earlier the STX IX 401 is a good budget stick and that it is good for a beginner. Both sticks are good options for beginners.

If you are interested in more options, check out my guide to Best Field Hockey Sticks for Beginners.

Sticks To Avoid

STX HPR 101

I have mentioned this stick before. It is a great stick for a beginner, but not for indoor play. This stick is great to learn on when you are playing outside.

Sticks have qualities that make them good for outdoor or indoor play. I do not recommend this stick for indoor play, as it is designed for the outdoors.

GRAYS 100i Indoor Wood Field Hockey Stick

Another stick that could be used for indoor play, I would not recommend it. It is a stick that is made for those just starting out.

There are better sticks to learn on and help you develop your skills. This stick is made with fiberglass and wood. While I am not completely against wood in a stick, there are better options with a better composition than this stick.

Can I Use An Outdoor Stick Indoors?

Technically yes you can use an outdoor stick indoors, but it is not recommended. The material of indoor sticks can be different from the stick you use outdoors.

Also, the field indoors might be different than what you play on outdoors. You don’t want to use a stick from outside on certain indoor floors.

Outdoor sticks are designed for playing on natural grass or turf, which typically have more friction and resistance compared to indoor surfaces like wooden or synthetic courts.

Using an outdoor stick indoors may feel heavier and less maneuverable due to the surface differences.

Outdoor sticks are usually built to withstand the rigors of playing on rough outdoor surfaces, so they may be more durable than indoor sticks.

However, the harder surfaces indoors could cause faster wear on the stick’s materials, especially if it’s not designed for indoor play.

Indoor play tends to be faster-paced and more focused on close ball control and quick passing.

Using an outdoor stick indoors may limit your ability to perform certain skills effectively and could potentially increase the risk of injury due to reduced control or unexpected stick behavior on indoor surfaces.

Can I Use An Indoor Stick Outdoors?

Again, technically you can use your indoor stick outdoors, but it really isn’t recommended.

The outdoor surface is different from the indoor surface. Outdoor surfaces tend to be natural grass or turf, whereas an indoor surface tends to be wooden or synthetic courts.

Indoor play is much faster than outdoor play, so you need a stick that is compatible with each style of play.

If you do decide to use an indoor field hockey stick outside occasionally, be prepared for faster wear and potential damage to the stick.

It’s generally better to use sticks specifically designed for outdoor play when playing on natural grass or turf to ensure optimal performance, durability, and safety.

Size Guide

The length of the stick is important for each player. The stick should come up to your hip bone. If a stick is too long or too short, it may not work for you. Here is a quick guide of what size stick you will need.

There are so many field hockey sticks out there to choose from. Each stick has good qualities about them and different reasons as to why it is a good stick.

Your position and style of play should define what stick is the best stick for you. The best stick for a defender wouldn’t be the best stick for a forward.

My pick for the best field hockey stick overall is the TK 2.1 Control Bow because it has all the features any player would want.

This stick made the top of the list because of the power, performance and design of the stick.

This stick is perfect for a midfielder or any all around player. It is not for a beginner though. The perfect balance between performance and design is for a more advanced player.

This stick is great for those who like power over feel, as it is a powerful stick. Power in the stick is referring to the Carbon in it as Carbon adds stiffness and power.

This was a little bit tougher to choose, but I went with the Gryphon Striker Samurai Field Hockey Stick. This soft yet powerful stick is a great choice for more advanced or elite players.

It is made up of Carbon, Kevlar, and Fiberglass. If you are a beginner or only have been playing for a short while, this stick may be tougher to learn on.

The striker samurai is extremely powerful and has an extreme late bow. The late bow and the groove of the stick make it great with drag flicking. The Gryphon is amazing for aerial tricks.

My top pick is the STX HPR 101. This stick is great for beginners and easy to learn on.

STX is a great company that has been around for a long time. Their sticks are great as they know what players are looking for in their sticks and develop them for the player.

The HPR 101 allows beginners to get used to the feeling of the ball hitting on and off the stick, as it is an easier touch for new players.

Sometimes the stick vibrates when the ball ricochets off the stick. The HPR lightens the feel of the ball on the stick, which allows you to get used to it more easily.

This stick is 10% Carbon, 85 % Fiberglass, and 5% Aramid and has a maxi toe shape. The maxi toe shape is a little bigger which increases the receiving area and is good for trapping and stopping the ball.

Trapping and stopping the ball are essential to receiving a pass.

The HPR 101 is great for learning ball control. Controlling the ball is important because if you cannot control the ball then you will not be able to master other skills.

Grays is a reputable brand that puts out great products. The GX2000 Dynabow is a great stick. This stick is not for a beginner, someone with experience would do well with this stick.

It has a high fiberglass content which is great for power and improved durability and 30 % Carbon which allows for better touch and ball control as well as some power. This stick is well balanced of control and power.

It has a Dynabow bow shape and a thin midsection. It is great for core skills and developing 3D skills. This is a great stick for the budget option and is a good overall stick for a midfielder.

Sticks To Avoid

Harrow Sonic Boom

The Harrow Sonic Boom is an older stick that isn’t as up to date as other sticks. It first came out in 2013 so this stick is not currently being made new.

This stick is made of 40% Carbon, 55% Fiberglass and 5% Aramid. It is not a stick for an advanced player.

Punk Multi Curve Hockey Stick

The Punk Multi Curve Hockey Stick by Malik is another stick that you should avoid. It is a stick from 2017 and there are more current sticks by Malik.

This stick is only 20% Carbon and 80% Fiberglass.

With such a low Carbon composite it doesn’t have as much power as other sticks. Being able to have more control and power in a stick is important as you need to control the

STX Stallion 50

The STX Stallion 50 is not a stick I would recommend as one of the best. It is a decent stick for a junior or beginner, but I still wouldn’t recommend it here.

It is made up of 100% Fiberglass, so it doesn’t have as much power as a stick with Carbon in it. You want a stick with Carbon as it allows for more control and power when hitting.

What Size Stick Do I Need?

The length of the stick is important for each player. The stick should come up to your hip bone. If a stick is too long or too short, it may not work for you. Here is a quick guide of what size stick you will need.

Height

Stick Size

3’5” and under

24”

3’6” to 3’8”

26”

3’8” to 4”

28”

4’1” to 4’3”

30”

4’4” to 4’6”

32”

4’7” to 5’0”

34″

5’1” to 5’3” 35”

35.5”

5’4” to 5’8”

36”-36.5”

5’9” to 5’11”

37”-37.5”

6” and up

38”

How To Choose A Field Hockey Stick

There are several factors when choosing a field hockey stick. Weight, skill level, composition, head shape, bow, balance point and position or how you play can play a part when choosing a stick.

Weight

There are three different weight options, light, medium, and heavy. Lighter sticks are ideal for forwards, due to their ability to allow them to dribble faster and shoot quicker. Medium weight sticks are ideal for midfielders, as they need to be able to have power, shoot, and stop the opposing team’s offense. Heavy weight is ideal for defense, as they need to be able to stop the offense and be able to pass the ball to the midfielders or offense.

Skill Level

Skill level can impact what stick you buy. If you are a beginner to the sport than you don’t want a stick that is more equipped for an advanced player. An advanced player could play with a beginners stick, but upgrading to a stick for an advanced player might help your game.

Composition

Material is very important with a stick and position. There are a few different materials a stick could be made out of. Carbon, fiberglass, Kevlar and wood.

Carbon is a great option for cutting-edge players. It is both light and tough and can in any case have the hitting power that you have to make a shot. The drawback to carbon is that it isn’t instinctively simple to control. It requires a great deal of training to be utilized well.

Fiberglass is utilized as a fortifying material to include toughness and quality. Fiberglass can likewise include a component of intensity when utilized without anyone else, however, when utilized in mix with carbon it fills in as a support.

Aramid or Kevlar are heavier obligation materials. They are anything but difficult to utilize, similar to fiberglass, however are explicitly intended to retain vibrations. This implies it won’t container your arm and your stick will be more grounded.

Wood is minimal solid of the considerable number of materials, it includes a component of adaptability and pardoning in the stick, taking into account clean gatherings without requiring as a lot of specialized expertise. Wooden sticks are an incredible instrument to learn on.

Head Shape

Head shape can be an important part of a stick. There are two different sizes and there are four shapes. The most common head shapes are maxi and midi.

A smaller head size allows for better flexibility and movability, but it also reduces hitting surface, power when hitting the ball and reverse stick control. A larger head on the other hand has the opposite effect. The larger head allows for better reverse stick control, power when hitting and hitting surface. It does however have less flexibility and movability.

The shapes of the head are J shape, midi, maxi and hook. J Shape allows for easier dribbling, quicker passes and receives the ball with less effort. Midi is shorter than maxi and J Shape, and it goes over the ball quicker when dribbling.

Maxi is bigger and is good for trapping and stopping. Hook is not a commonly used shape by players. It is a stick that takes time to get used to, but once you are used to it you do not want to get rid of it. It creates a little “pocket” when the ball is being dribbled. It also helps with lifts.

Bow

In field hockey, the term bow refers to the curve or bend in the hockey stick. The bow can vary in its degree and placement along the length of the stick. It’s designed to enhance player skills and performance in different aspects of the game.

A low bow stick typically has a pronounced curve that starts closer to the head of the stick (near the toe) and is often favored by players who prioritize drag-flicking, aerials, and 3D skills. This shape allows for easier lifting of the ball and better control during dribbling and maneuvering.

On the other hand, a mid bow or standard bow stick has a more gradual curve, positioned slightly further down the stick. This design offers a balance between control and power, making it suitable for various playing styles and positions on the field.

The choice of bow depends on the player’s preferences, playing style, and position, as well as the specific demands of the game.

Balance Point

The balance point of a field hockey stick refers to the specific location along the stick where it is evenly balanced when resting on a pivot point. This point is crucial because it affects the feel, control, and handling of the stick during gameplay.

The balance point can vary depending on factors such as the stick’s weight, length, composition, and design features like the bow. Generally, a well-balanced stick will feel comfortable to hold and maneuver, allowing players to control the ball effectively while minimizing strain or fatigue.

Manufacturers often aim to optimize the balance point based on the stick’s intended use and target player preferences. Some players may prefer a balance point closer to the handle for better control, while others may prefer it closer to the head for more power in their shots.

Ultimately, finding the right balance point is a matter of personal preference and may require experimentation with different stick designs and configurations to determine what works best for an individual player’s playing style and comfort.

Position

Each position has different needs, so keeping in mind what position you play can help you get the best stick. Do not worry if you do not know what position you want to play.

You will learn them and figure out what you want to play. If you are unsure what position you are going to play, that is okay, there are sticks that can be used for any position.

A forward might want a stick which allows them to do 3d or aerial tricks whereas a defender isn’t interested in those types of tricks.

Your playing style might also affect which stick you would like. A midfielder who tends to play a little more offensively might want a stick that allows for control, speed and even the ability for aerial tricks. A forward that isn’t ready for aerial tricks might do better learning on a stick that isn’t all about the tricks and can focus on shooting and other aspects of the game.

If you are looking for a stick that is more budget friendly but still a top pick keep reading…

Another option for midfielder is the Grays GTi6000 Jumbow.

This stick is intended for indoor use and not outdoors. The Grays GTi6000 Jumbow is a solid all around stick for a midfielder.

It is made with 60% Carbon and offers high end performance. This stick has incredible control and agility, two things a midfielder should look for in a stick.

Power, passing, shooting and drag flicking are some of the things this stick is good for. Control and power are a couple reasons why I like this stick.

Sticks To Avoid

OBO ROBO Straight

The OBO company produces goalie equipment, so avoiding any OBO goalie sticks would be a good decision. Some goalie sticks are curved and you can tell that it is specifically designed for goalies.

The Robo straight might look good and like any other stick, but that’s because it is a straight stick, it says it right in the name. It is a goalie stick so I wouldn’t recommend any field player getting it.

STX RX 50

The RX50 is a decent stick for a beginner, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a midfielder or someone who has played the game before. It is made of 100% fiberglass, which gives it less power. Power can be important when sending the ball up the field to another player.

It has a slim handle which some players may not like, as they prefer a little bit more in the handle. Again, it’s lightweight feel is good for a beginner, but a midfielder should look at other sticks instead of this one.

Something To Remember

Midfield is an important position as you are doing everything on the field from offense to defense and anything else the team needs. You are stopping goals and scoring them. It is great to have a stick that allows you to do everything on the field.

You don’t need the best stick to score or the best stick to defend, but you need one that is great at everything. Of course there are different types of midfielders on a team.

Some are more defensive midfielders while others are more offensive minded midfielders. That doesn’t mean you won’t be doing everything on the field. It is good to know what type of midfielder you are.

More defensive midfielders can also look at best sticks for defenders when deciding what stick to get. And offensive midfielders can look at best sticks for forwards.

Make sure you do your research before buying a stick and make sure it is one that is good for both your position and your playing style.

Size Chart

There are different pieces of equipment needed when playing field hockey. Your stick is going to be your most important piece of equipment, but there are others that you will need as well.

Without certain pieces of equipment, such as cleats, shin guards and mouthguard, you may not be able to play. Here are some of the pieces of equipment that you will need in order to play.

Sticks

A stick is the most important piece of equipment you will need. Without a stick you cannot play. It is important to have a stick that is good for your skill level and your position. Check out these stick guides for what stick is the best fit for you.

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Beginners

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Forwards

Best Field Hockey Sticks For Defenders

Cleats

Cleats are important as you need to wear them. Whether you are playing on turf or grass, you will need cleats.

Cleats are important because the allow you to gain more traction on the surface (turf, grass etc) you are playing on.

This should help with preventing a fall or injury. Make sure you look at what type of cleats you need, such as indoor or outdoor. If you are not sure about the difference you can find that information here.

Shin Guards

Shin guards are meant to protect your leg, from your ankle to the bottom of your knee. Basically your entire shin. Everyone is going for the ball and using their stick.

The chance of you getting hit by the ball or stick is very likely. The shin guards are supposed to help protect you if you were to get hit in the leg.

Socks

Socks for field hockey are long. They cover your leg to help keep your shin guard in the right spot, as well as help protect you from blisters. You are running and sweating, you want to protect your feet from getting blisters as they can be painful.

Goggles

While you aren’t necessarily putting your face in harms way, excluding goalies, there is always the chance you accidentally run into someone.

Sometimes the ball is in the air, which could hit you. Or you could get hit in the face, which is not fun, I learned the hard way. Goggles are not mandatory, but they do offer protection to your face.

Mouth Piece

Again, just like the mouth piece goggles are to protect your face. They usually go across your eyes to protect them. It is another safety equipment piece that could help.

Hair Ties

This one might sound silly, but hair ties. If you have long hair you do not want it getting in your face. You need to be able to see the field at all times.

Make sure you keep your hair tied back and out of your face. If you have shorter hair you can always use a headband to keep any from falling in front of your face. Soft hair ties are usually better than hard ones.

Water Bottle

Another piece of equipment that might seem silly but a water bottle. It is important to stay hydrated in general, so playing field hockey will make you need some fluids.

Obviously water is the go to to stay hydrated, so having a good reusable water bottle comes in handy when needing to have a good amount of water with you. The type of water bottle you use is up to you, but I like the reusable Gatorade bottles.

Ball

Usually coaches have plenty of balls to practice with, but this does not mean you shouldn’t have your own. Having your own ball allows you to practice on your own, whether that’s at home or the field.

The game is played with a ball so it is good to have one or two so you can practice on your own or with others. Getting used to the ball and learning to play with it is important.

Stick Bag

This one may not be mandatory, but it is extremely useful and you should have one. The name says what it is, a bag for your stick. But, everything else you need for the game or practice can go right in the bag.

Essentially this will carry everything you need from your stick to ball to water bottle and everything else you need. They are easy to use and really do make a difference with carrying everything around.

Grip

Grip is usually wrapped around the top part of the stick, up yo the handle. This helps players hold on to their stick.

Grip can be worn out even when the stick is still good. Adding new grip tape to the stick can help you handle the stick and you won’t need to get a new stick right away.

Practice Clothing

This one might seem silly, but you need clothes to practice in. Just like playing any other sport or going to the gym, you need workout/practice clothes.

Field hockey is usually a fall sport and depending where you live can depend on the temperature. You may have summer practices in August when it can be 90 or even 100 degrees outside.

If you are playing in November it might be cold and you will need something warmer to wear. Make sure you have a mix of clothing for hot and cold days. Long sleeve compression shirts can be worn under t-shirts or jerseys if you need it.

Rebounder

While this is not required for you to play it is a great training aid. The rebounder allows you to practice your passing and trapping. When the rebounder is set up on the floor you will face it.

You can pass the ball into the rebounder and then it will come back to you. While you can practice passing into a wall, the rebounder makes a better option as it is created to help you improve your passing.

The other side of the rebounder allows you to practice knocking the ball down. It also comes with an app, field hockey star app, which can help you improve your skills.

Cones

Cones are another equipment piece that is great for training with. Again, you don’t need it to play the game, but it is great to practice with.

Setting up the cones and dribbling through them and around them is a great way to improve your dribbling skills. Running an obstacle course with cones is another good way to use them.

Star Skiller

The Star Skiller is another great training aid. It is used to help improve your dribbling, stick handling and ball control skills. It is light weight and can be brought with you wherever you practice. If you want to improve your skills, as they are an important part of the game, I highly recommend the star skiller. It also comes with an app, field hockey star app, which can help you improve your skills.

The origins of field hockey can be traced back several centuries, and its exact beginnings are not entirely clear. The sport evolved over time, with different cultures contributing to its development. Here is an overview of how field hockey is believed to have started:

Ancient Origins: Some historians believe that a form of field hockey was played in ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Persia, and Greece, dating as far back as 4,000 years ago. These early versions of the game involved hitting a ball with sticks, much like the modern sport.

England: The modern version of field hockey began to take shape in England during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was influenced by various traditional stick-and-ball games played in different parts of the British Isles. The sport became particularly popular in schools and universities, where standardized rules started to be established.

Formalization of Rules: In the mid-19th century, several schools and clubs formulated their own rules for field hockey, leading to different variations of the game. One significant development was the establishment of the Hockey Association in England in 1886. This organization standardized the rules and regulations of field hockey and separated it from other stick-and-ball games like bandy and shinty.

International Spread: Field hockey’s popularity grew beyond England, and it started to spread to other countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The sport’s first international match was played in 1895 between Ireland and Wales. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) was founded in 1924 to govern the sport globally.

Olympic Recognition: Field hockey was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1908 (for men) and 1980 (for women). Since then, it has become a regular fixture at the Summer Olympics.

Over time, field hockey continued to evolve, with rule changes and the development of different playing styles. Today, it is played and enjoyed by millions of people around the world and remains a prominent sport at both amateur and professional levels.

In the United States field hockey is mostly played by women athletes, whereas in other countries field hockey is played by both men and women.

The pick for the best stick for indoor play is the STX IX 901. The STX IX 901 is great for an experienced player.

It was created with additional carbon to have a lighter feel with more stiffness, which is why it is good for someone who has been playing and is not new to the sport.

It has a low bow shape and a maxi toe. Being made with carbon and having the extreme low bow shape allows this stick to have great precision, speed and lift on cage.

Having a stick that allows for speed and power is important for an offensive player. You need to be able to dribble and move the ball fast, as well as shoot the ball with power.

Sticks To Avoid

Grays GX 1000

The Grays GX 1000 is a good stick for a beginner or for a defender. The GX 1000 has a maxi toe shape and is a heavier stick. As a forward you should look for a stick that is lighter in weight.

STX XPR 901

The XPR 901 is another good stick, just not for a forward. It has a heavy toe and a standard bow shape. It has a heavier feel to it as well, which is another reason why it is not the best choice for a forward.

What To Look For When Choosing A Forward Stick

As a forward there are several factors you want to keep an eye out for when choosing a stick.

A forward would regularly search for a shorter stick so as to be able to fly down the field and have the capacity to flick the ball when in all-out attack mode.

Being able to have a good handle on the ball and be able to shoot the ball fast and powerful can be dependent on stick and skill.

The shape of the head is important for forwards as they need to dribble and shoot. J shape and midi toe are the best head shape for forwards.

A lighter-weight stick is ideal for this position, as they need to be able to move fast down the field. A lighter stick allows for this, which is important. A smaller in size stick can also come in handy, as a forward wants to be able to dribble the ball down the field fast.

Power can also play an important part in a stick. Forwards will be shooting the ball so they want their stick to have power, not only to score, but to get through the defense so they have the chance to score.

Knowing the rules well makes you a better player and can give you an advantage over others.

Field hockey is a fast-paced and exciting sport with specific rules that players must follow to ensure fair play and safety. Once you are playing you will get used to them. You will also hear a lot of whistles when you play. Once you read the rules and play a little you will learn why. The object of the sport is to get the ball into the cage and score, but there are a number of rules you have to follow in order to do that. Knowing the rules well will give you an advantage on the field.

Players are NOT allowed to touch the ball with their feet or other body parts. The only player allowed to do so is the goalie, as long as they are in the circle.

Players can only use the flat side of their stick to touch the ball.

Goals can only be scored inside the striking circle. These goals can come from a shot inside the circle, a penalty corner, or a penalty stroke.

Dangerous play: Any action that could cause harm to another player is considered dangerous play and is prohibited. This includes raising the stick above the shoulder level or playing the ball dangerously close to other players.

5-meter rule: Defenders must stand at least five meters away from the ball during free hits, penalty corners, and penalty strokes.

Free hits: When a foul occurs, the opposing team is awarded a free hit. The ball must be stationary before taking the free hit, and the ball cannot directly enter the circle without first touching another player’s stick.

Self-pass: On free hits and some other restarts, players are allowed to take the ball themselves without passing it to a teammate first.

Goalkeeper rules: Goalkeepers have additional restrictions, such as not using their feet or body outside the goal circle and only being allowed to kick the ball inside the circle.

Field Hockey Fouls

There are a dozen or so fouls or penalties that can occur in the game. Tripping, pushing, charging, interfering with, getting physical with another player and other fouls result in a penalty. When a penalty is called you will hear a whistle, which means they are calling the penalty. The penalty can result in a free hit, a penalty corner, or a penalty stroke. It depends where on the field the foul takes place and the severity of the foul.

Advancing. This is when any player pushes, shoves, or advances the ball by using any part of their body. (You can sometimes get away with this if you are down at the cage and trying to score. If there are multiple people down there and everyone is trying to get the ball and it rolls in front of your foot and you kick it. I DO NOT recommend doing this IF there is a stick coming towards your foot or the ball.)

Backstick. This is when the ball hits the backside, or non-smooth part of the stick. (Sometimes you can get away with this if the ref is not close enough to see you. An example is if there are several players trying to hit or shoot the ball at the same time and it hits the backside of a stick)

Hockey Stick Interference. This is when a player either intentionally or unintentionally uses their stick to.

Obstruction. This is when a player uses their stick or body to prevent another player from reaching the ball. This can happen either by accident or on purpose. Either way, it will be called.

Third Party Obstruction. This is when a player positions themselves between an opponent and the ball, allowing a teammate to have an unobstructed play on the ball. Just like obstruction, this could be accidental or on purpose. It still will be called.

High Sticks. This is when a player’s stick is raised dangerously high or near another player.

Undercutting. This is when a player lifts the ball in a dangerous manner.

Field Hockey Punishments

When a player commits a foul, the opposite team is rewarded with a free play. Depending where and the severity of the foul determines the free play.

Free Hit. This is when a team has a free hit of the ball into the field. This is usually a spot foul, meaning the free hit will happen where the foul occurred. All opposing members must be at least five feet away from the free hit.

Penalty Corner. This is when foul occurs inside the striking circle, or is intentionally hit out of bounds by the defense. One offensive player stands on the end line ten yards away from the goal post. There are other offensive players around the circle, waiting for the ball to be played. The goalie and four defenders stand inside the cage until the ball is played. Once the ball is hit in play, the defenders are allowed to rush out of the cage and towards the ball. The player who hits the ball into play can only hit the ball once. So if the ball is hit and only rolls a few feet, that player can not touch the ball, until any other player touches the ball first.

Penalty Stroke. This occurs when an almost certain goal has been stopped, or if a severe foul occurs. The player taking the penalty stroke stands on the hash mark about seven yards away from the goal. The player has one free shot towards the goal from the hash.

Umpire Cards

Umpires have three cards that can be called. Green, yellow and red.

Green Card – This is the official warning given out to not break the rules.

Yellow Card – This means you will be off the field for five minutes.

Red Card – This is for more serious offenses and the player must leave the game.

These rules are essential for maintaining order, fairness, and safety in field hockey matches. It’s crucial for players, coaches, and officials to be familiar with and adhere to these rules.

Grays has been around for years and their sticks tend to be really good. The stick I recommend here is the Grays GX 1000. Grays sticks are good and reliable.

The GX 1000 is light in weight. It is made from carbon, aramid and has a fiberglass wrapping. It has a maxi head shape which is good for trapping and stopping, two skills that you will need to learn.

It is easy to learn stick skills, such as passing and dribbling, on this stick. It also allows for easier control, which is great for someone just starting out.

Stick skills and control are important because if you cannot control the ball then you will not be able to maintain possession of the ball. Stick skills are important because they are used throughout the entire game.

I recommend this stick because it allows you to learn stick skills and control, which are highly important to know and master.

My next top choice is the Mazon Fusion 500. This stick is all-around great for beginners as it is solid and powerful. It has a maxi head shape.

The maxi head shape has an increased receiving area which is good for those starting out as it allows for more area to stop and trap the ball. You can learn to control the ball and various stick skills, such as passing and trapping, on this stick fairly easily.

The Fusion 500 is durable and has great control. It is 10% Carbon. This stick is great at absorbing the vibration from trapping the ball or from a hit.

As a beginner, you probably want to stay within a certain budget, especially since you may want to upgrade your gear as you get better.

The stick I recommend here is the CranBarry Falcon. CranBarry sticks are good and reliable.

The Falcon is made up mostly of fiberglass and mulberry wood. It is durable and has an extended grip, which is great as it allows you to have better control.

It has a reinforced tow which helps with durability.

Having this stick allows you to learn control, which is an important skill in the game as you need to have control of the ball. It is lightweight and durable which makes it a great first stick.

The top choice for a beginner is the TK 3.6 Control Bow Composite.

The TK 3.6 Control Bow Composite is a good option for a beginner or intermediate player. It is a good stick to continue learning the game when playing indoors.

The STX IX 401 is another stick that it is good for a beginner. Both sticks are good options for beginners.

To read more about the STX IX 401, read my guide of Best Indoor Field Hockey Sticks.

Sticks to Avoid

As a beginner, there are some sticks you should not buy. It’s not because they are bad sticks, it is because these sticks require some skill to use them. These sticks are designed for those who have been playing for a while.

GRAYS GR7000 ULTRABOW

The Grays GR7000 Ultrabow is a great stick for midfielders with experience, but as a beginner this stick isn’t a good choice for you. You need something that will work with you and your skill level. As you learn the game and practice more, the better your stick handling skills will become and then you can look into upgrading to a better stick.

PRINCESS 7 STAR LOW BOW

Again, this is another top of the line stick. It is made of 100% carbon and is the stiffest stick in the Princess line. As a beginner you need to learn the basic stick handling and ball control. With this stick being so stiff it is extremely responsive to the ball, which is why it is not recommended for beginners, but is highly recommended for advanced or elite players.

What Beginners Should Look For When Choosing A Stick

If you’re just getting started with field hockey then you’ll have different needs from a stick than an experienced player. There are four main factors you should be looking at when deciding on a stick: weight, material, position, and head shape.

Material

Material is very important with a stick and position. There are a few different materials a stick could be made out of. Carbon, fiberglass, kevlar and wood.
